Family First by: JB Jimenez

Ano kayang halaga ng tagumpay sa career if it has been achieved at the expense of the family. What profit does a man have Kung mawawala naman ang kanyang pamilya? OO nga, meron siyang salapi na milyon ang halaga, magandang mansyon, travels around the world, and cavorts with an array of girls, women, and ladies, pero naman ang kapalit kung ikaw naman ay being hated by your daughters and is the mortal enemy of your sons. Can success in career really make up for failure at home?
Which then is more important, wealth or family? A great number of us would readily say family. Pero totoo kaya na ang ating sinasabi ay ating ginagawa. But do we walk our talk ika nga? Are we willing to translate our mindsets into concrete actions? Day by day, we are bombarded by 52 million dollar questions, Sino ba ang mahalaga ang mga anak ko o ang trabaho ko.
To my fellow employees, I don't know how you react out there or would answer my questions. In my case, as an accountant who always spend overtime in the office to be able to submit deadline reports come month-end or cut-off period, I have made unforgivable mistakes? If I have to live my life again, I would need to overhaul my priorities, to re-channel the efforts that I have been exerting with passions and commitment. I thought all along na ang lahat ng ginagawa kong pagpapahirap at pagtratrabaho to the max to get a promotion, I am doing it all for the family. But I was wrong.
Today I know better. When my wife or daughter is on the phone I make sure that I attend to them first, never mind if there are urgent things to attend or papers to submit to my superior, after all they can wait for 10 minutes...but if I deny the 10 minutes that is so important to them, it would have a lasting effect than to my Boss who might be replaced in a couple of years. My family is my top priority, period. It is not a choice between my family and my career.
MY FAMILY IS THE REASON WHY I NEED A CAREER. My career will come and go employers can come and go but one's family will remain even beyond the grave. They even take care of our graves. Noon kahit mayroon affairs sa school ang aking mga anak, I'd tend to preponderate toward the official duty and delegate the affairs of my kids to my wife. I used to operate on the paradigm that I should focus on the duty first before pleasure. Now I know that MY first duty is toward my loved ones. I should put my time where my heart belongs.
Today if I will to do it all over again, I'd reverse my priorities. My son will only graduate once in elementary and only once in high school, I will make sure I will be there, I will file my vacation leave and if my Boss rejected it because I need to attend to a company function where I am required to attend, I would still go to my kids graduation no matter what the consequences are. This time I am willing to become an average corporate officer, a so-so business executive but a great father. I'm willing to be reprimanded by my Boss for a late report but not hated by a daughter for not remembering her birthday every year.....na ilalabas ko siya the whole day and cherish the moments every minute dahil alam ko hindi ko na maibabalik ito kapag lumaki na siya at kung gawin ko man later, baka huli na. There are more important matters compared to corporate business meetings, Family peace and love- these are the ones that matter most.
BUT I SPEAK ONLY FOR MYSELF. I DO NOT IMPOSE VALUES ON YOU GUYS OUT THERE.
If you think possessions are more important than family, go ahead. Spend 20 hours in the office, bring home your corporate work. Neglect your wife. don't spend quality time with your kids. don't attend important family gatherings. Find work that you are away for a week and only meet your family every week-ends, oh what a waste. Delegate raising the children to your spouse. Leave the young kids to the nanny. Let the driver brings your kids to school. Ask someone to represent in your son college graduation. If you find something wrong at home, don't mind it, anyway your concentration is in your job. You have your career remember? Don't greet your father and mother on their anniversary. Spend all your time in the company. Baka mawala ang tiwala ng Boss mo sa iyo sayang ang pinagpaguran mo ng matagal.
If you have aging parents, don't visit them. enjoy your career in isolation. Drink, dance, be merry, But in the end, you lose all the love ones who love you more, after neglecting them. No wife, no kids, no family. you are alone and pretending to be happy. don't blame your company. don't lay the Burden on your Boss. Hindi ba You made the choice? You opted to put more value on your career. Dahil sabi mo pinaghirapan mo lahat ito and pangarap mo na ito simula pagkabata dahil mahirap ka lang ikaw muna...gusto mong yumaman. You gambled and you lost. I know of an executive na masyadong depressed...every week lang siyang umuwi sa pamilya niya. Week-ends lang niya nalalaro ang mga bata kung minsan required pa mag-stay ng sabado sa office, who finds no meaning in his life, he's got the money, a beautiful wife who according to him might be hiding something from him (you know what I mean) and the kids are not genuinely closed to him, for no apparent reason he had pulled the trigger to his head. He's got everything and he lost everything. that is the tragedy of it all.
As for me, I know better. After all the pains, the burdens of mistaken priorities, I have made my choice. Anytime, anywhere, my family comes first. My career, my business, my outside clients, all my other pursuits are only means to the end of all my sacrifices, my wife, my sons, my daughters, my family. I shall thus manage my various objectives well. there shall not be conflicting objective anymore. For I now know clearly my prioroties and I shall be faithful to them. I shall be willing to give them up; excess money, much comfort, travels, and girls for and in the name of the family. that is simple and straighforward.
PS.
Are you aware that if we die tomorrow, the company that we are working for could easily replace us in a matter of days. But the family we left behind will feel the loss for the rest of their lives. And come to think of it, we pour ourselves more into work than to our own family, an unwise investment indeed, don't you think? And we often treat strangers and coworkers better than members of our family.

Do you know what the word FAMILY means?

FAMILY = (F)ATHER (A)ND (M)OTHER, (I), (L)OVE,(Y)OU

The Journey of my Life

by : Jennifer T. Bicomong

Hi!!! Fellow Canossians and Friends.
Spending 11 years in Canossa have educated me a lot. Ang batch namin ang 1st batch na may mga boys!!!! YES!!! COED na rin ang highschool. For me, wala gaano changes kasi I graduated elementary at the same school.
I come to get new friends. Every school year is a new set of classmates. Sobra daming experiences; my ups and downs, the laughters and tears, plus the excitements. Quizzes…. Monthly and Quarterly Exams…. Card Giving… Feast Days… Recollection / Retreat….. Recognitions…. Every thing wrap into one…
Finally, its graduation day!
I studied BS Accountancy at St. Paul College of Manila. Nice to see there are some of my highschool batchmates : Karen Estrallado, Nina Ocampo, Tricia Azcarate & Carmela Aquino, kung may nakalimutan ako pasensiya na.. Sori medyo may memory gap na yata ako. Not too many adjustment kaya lang sobrang home sick ako. I stayed in the dormitory inside the school campus kaya ayon minsan-minsan nakaktakas din going to Robinsons-Malate and Harisson Plaza… I finished the course 1995. I took the CPA board exam and I failed.
At first, I’m so sad and upset but a friend of mine guided me all through out. Thanks to Sr. Lydia Pablo, fdcc (remember her??? Just to recall she substitute Mrs. Buenviaje, who is on maternity leave) who stood beside me during those days of adversity but of course with my family. When Sr. Lydia leaves Canossa-San Pablo and was transfer to Paco Manila we became good friends…. It’s a long…. Long story….
My first job…. Naku! Terrible !!! I was hired as a Bank Teller at Monte de Piedad Saving Bank in San Pablo. After my bank experience, I was hired as an accountant at SHARP Phils. Corp. for 4 years. After that, I worked for a year as Sales Specialist at Murata Electronics.
Finally now, I’m currently working at Universal Robina Corporation, under Credit & Collection Department, for 5 years. Fortunately, Sobrang happy ako dahil for the past one year dito ako na-assigned sa Calamba, Laguna…. Madami trabaho….. reports…. Meetings pero ang mas masaya nakaka-uwi ako sa amin (San Pablo) araw-araw.
Still single and enjoying LIFE!!!! This is the heart of life enjoying the things I do. For the past… I aspired to enter nunnery but as I go on the journey of my life I find myself more worthy in the outside world… At some point of my extra time I do digiscrap booking.

The First Reunion after 15 years...

by : Sally Faraon (May 2006)

Boisterous, wacky, surreal – these are just some of the words to describe the first Batch ’91 Summer Reunion held last April 30, 2006 at the Brucal Function Hall in San Pablo City.

Everything was all set at exactly 3 pm. The venue was delightfully decorated with artistically designed balloons (courtesy of Ms. Arlyn Alcantara-Fuentes). Jenny Sia and Randolph Liay helped in the registration as our batch mates started arriving one by one and in small groups. Aileen Prodigalidad-Eneria, one of the early birds, busied herself preparing for her hosting job and with the help of Doc Ann Claire Katigbak, prepared some last minute details of the games.

True to Canossian tradition, the program started with an opening prayer led by Papa Dolph Liay. He included a special prayer for our dearly departed batch mates – Cyrus Masa, Maricel Javier and Edsel Embalsado. An impromptu inspirational talk was given by Mike Emlano. As an ice breaker, the game “Trip to Jerusalem: Adult Version” was played. Sarah Guia bested the other contestants by being the fastest to shoot the straw in her partner’s bottle using her mouth. The funniest game was “Paint Me A Portrait” where two groups outdo each other in portraying some real life scenes.Dorinn Laluna-Montero was hilarious when she imitated everybody’s favorite teacher –Ms. Mendres. The contestants for this game did a good acting job – so real and so natural (especially the honeymoon scene!). The most controversial game was the revised version of Suck & Blow (a.k.a. Calling card game). It’s so controversial that some contestants requested that we don’t release the photos from this game.

One of the most memorable moments of the reunion was when everyone got a chance to share something about themselves. Atty. Ryan Abrenica gamely facilitated the sharing. It was fascinating to listen to the stories and learn how much “grownup” we have become.
This event will not be complete without sumptuous meals, drinks and videoke singing. These were all enjoyed by everyone as they mingled and chatted with old friends whom they haven’t seen for 15 years.
Planning for the December Grand Reunion was squeezed in, where everyone willingly shared their ideas.Several committees were formed to spearhead the challenging task of organizing the Grand Reunion.
Let’s hope and work for the Grandest Reunion in December!

Canossa College - Founder

Her Life

The Marchioness Magdalene of Canossa was born in Verona of rich and noble family on March 1st 1774, in one of the grandest palaces of the city. She was the third child of the Marquis Ottavio and Coutess Teresa Szluha.
She was destined for a more extraordinary mission which would lead her to abandon the comforts of wealth and nobility in order to dedicate herself to the humble and the abandoned.
Already in her early childhood years, she showed herself to be talented, sensitive and most affectionate. She experienced deprivation in the most desolating form.
Her childhood was unhappy. She was only five years old when her father met with a sudden death. Two years after, her mother left her to enter into a second marriage. The five Canossian orphans were entrusted to a French governess whose initial burst of enthusiasm for Magdalene was gifted with an unusually keen intuition.
At 17, she attempted an experience of cloistered life with the Carmelites but there, she understood that life was not for her. She returned to her family where she took up the task of heading and guiding the household during a time of extreme difficulty. It was towards the end of the 1700s that Verona was occupied successively by the French and the Austrians and the Canossa Palace hosted famous generals and emperors.
Amidst the outburst of temporal glory, Magdalene withdrew herself gradually. Each day, was her union with God intensified, so did her heart and arms open to the poorer classes who were increasingly being exploited and ill-treated. She felt an urgent need to break down the dividing walls of her palace and help alleviate the ignorance, the moral and material poverty of the most abandoned and the poorest.
After recovering from a life-threatening small pox, Magdalen felt a calling to help the poor and the sick. She began her charitable works/ works of charity in 1808 in Verona with a few companions. On December 23, 1828, her charitiable organization Institue of the Daughters of Charity, was set up.
Magdalen died in Verona on April 10, 1835. She was beatified in Rome on December 8, 1941. Then she was canonized on Octopber 2, 1988 and became St. Magdalen of Canossa. Her feast day is on May 8.
St. Magdalene says: "God is pleased with very small sacrifices that carry more merit than any shortlived, though remarkable, penance. "
